Back to the terminal
Chapter 10/10 · Avilés
We return to the terminal. On the way we pass the Muelle Park, built at the end of the nineteenth century on old marshland. In it are the statue of Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, the sailor I mentioned beside the church, the monument to the seal, an emblem of the city, and a music kiosk.
As we cross the estuary again, look back: the old town on one side and the Niemeyer Centre on the other. The estuary was heavily polluted by twentieth-century industry. Since 2003 its banks have been restored, and today there is an estuary walkway of about three and a half kilometres.
We are back where we started. Thank you for the walk. If you have time left, try a glass of cider and, if you are here during Holy Week, the Avilés mantecado, the typical sweet of those days. And remember the departure time of your ship. Bon voyage!
