Back to the Cathedral

Chapter 11/11 · Barcelona

Audio coming soon: meanwhile, the text is read aloud with your device voice.

We are back at the Pla de la Seu, where we started. In about four kilometres we have explored Roman and Gothic Barcelona, La Rambla and La Boqueria, the Plaça Reial, the Ribera and the Modernisme of the Palau de la Música.

If you have time, go into the cathedral. In 1519 its choir hosted a chapter of the Order of the Golden Fleece called by Charles I, and the coats of arms painted on the choir stalls can still be seen. At Corpus Christi the cloister hosts “l'ou com balla”, a Barcelona tradition in which an egg “dances” on the jet of a fountain decorated with flowers.

Next to the cloister, with its entrance from the street, is the chapel of Santa Llúcia, in late Romanesque style, built between 1257 and 1268 as the chapel of the Bishop's Palace. And the top of the lantern tower is crowned by a figure of Saint Helena, to whom tradition attributes the finding of the True Cross.

Thank you for walking with us. Enjoy Barcelona!
