Church of San Félix

Chapter 2/10 · Candás

This is the Church of San Félix, home of the Holy Christ of Candás. Its history goes back to the 10th century: in the year 912, King Fruela II and his wife gave it to Oviedo Cathedral.

According to tradition, in the first third of the 16th century some fishermen from Candás, hunting whales off Ireland, saw the image of Christ floating in the sea and brought it home. In 1936, during the Civil War, the church and the image were destroyed; today's Christ is a reproduction made in 1938. One of the Baroque altarpieces was saved by the local sculptor Antón, who took it apart and stored it. Every 14 September the town celebrates the feast of the Christ, chief patron of the fishermen's guilds of Asturias.

We carry on along the upper part of town to the Antón Museum.
