Buen Suceso Chapel

Chapter 6/9 · Lastres

We are in the Balleneros quarter, the whalers' quarter, one of the oldest corners of Lastres, in front of the Chapel of the Virgen del Buen Suceso, from the 16th century. The most valuable thing inside is its polychrome Baroque altarpiece, by Luis Fernández de la Vega. The Virgen del Buen Suceso is the patron saint of the mareantes, the seafarers of Lastres.

The name of the quarter recalls that whales were already being hunted from Lastres in the 16th century, as in other ports on the Cantabrian Sea. By the middle of that century the harbour was one of the main ones in Asturias thanks to fishing, whaling and sea trade.

The Virgin's feast day is 8 September, with a novena, Mass and a procession to the chapel, where those who died at sea are remembered, such as the victims of the sinking of the Glorioso San Antonio on 6 September 1944.

Now we go down the Fragua steps to the harbour.
