Church of Santa María
Chapter 7/9 · Luanco
This is the Church of Santa María de Luanco, a listed Heritage Site since 1992. It is a Baroque building constructed between 1728 and 1735 to a design by the Gijón architect Pedro Moñiz Somonte, paid for by the Mariners' Guild and built almost at the edge of the Cantabrian Sea.
It is plain outside and Baroque inside, with seven 18th-century altarpieces. The main altarpiece holds the Christ of Succour (Cristo del Socorro), patron of fishermen. According to tradition, on 5 February 1776 he saved the crews of fifteen boats from Luanco and five from elsewhere from a violent storm; every 5 February the town celebrates his feast.
We return along Calle La Riba and the seafront promenade to La Ribera Beach.
