Back to Puerta del Sol

Chapter 11/11 · Madrid

We are back at Puerta del Sol, where we started. In about three kilometres we have walked through Habsburg Madrid, past the cathedral and the Royal Palace, the Plaza de Oriente and the Teatro Real, and along some of the liveliest streets in the centre.

Before you go, look on the façade of the Real Casa de Correos for the plaques dedicated to the heroes of the popular uprising of 2 May 1808 and to the victims of the attacks of 11 March 2004. On the square there is also the Mariblanca, a replica of the statue that crowned an old fountain here.

The equestrian statue of Charles III in the centre of the square was unveiled in 1994. It is a bronze copy of a model kept by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, attributed to Juan Pascual de Mena, with the king's head by Manuel Álvarez de la Peña. Streets such as Mayor, Arenal, Alcalá and Preciados start here; following Calle de Alcalá you reach Cibeles and the Paseo del Prado.

Thank you for walking with us. Enjoy Madrid!
