Arias Palace
Chapter 6/11 · Navia
The Arias Palace is the most striking building of the expansion district. It was designed by the architect Luis Menéndez Pidal for Luis Arias Martínez and built between 1925 and 1929. According to the tourist office, it cost one million pesetas of the time.
It is a late example of eclecticism. It mixes the montañés style, visible in the tower full of balconies and in the roofs at different heights, with elements of Herrerian architecture and of the Habsburg period. At the top of the tower there is a kind of «ajimez», a double window with a small column in the middle. Today it is a hotel.
These mansions, the Casino and the houses of the expansion district speak of an era: the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the money of emigrants and of the local middle class improved communications and life in the municipality and gave the town much of its present look.
Now we walk up Calle de las Armas and Calle del Reloj to the town hall.
