Town Hall Square

Chapter 3/9 · Pravia

We are in the Plaza Marquesa de Casa Valdés, the Town Hall square. The Town Hall dates from 1779; it is Neoclassical and was designed by Ventura Rodríguez, the great architect of the Enlightenment. Inside, it is arranged around a central courtyard with octagonal columns.

It was paid for with salmon money. From 1669 the municipality held the privilege of collecting the fishing rent on the Nalón, from Las Mestas del Narcea down to Espilonga, near the river mouth, and the council used it to pay for fountains, roads and schools. On one side stands the house of the Marchioness of Casa Valdés, which gives the square its name, another fine example of 18th-century academic architecture.

A few steps further on, the Casa del Busto is waiting.
