Madreñas Square
Chapter 5/9 · Pravia
This is the Plaza de las Madreñas, with 18th-century houses. Around it, the streets of La Victoria, Las Huertas and Nueva form a web of narrow lanes and quiet little squares that keeps the layout of the medieval town.
Pravia was founded as a new town in the 13th century, when King Ferdinand III granted it a charter, and later it was surrounded by a wall. The wall has gone, but the old town keeps its rounded shape, and in 1995 the historic centre was declared a Site of Cultural Interest. Look at the façades: they used to be rendered with lime and sand from the Nalón, which gave them a greyish tone from the coal the river carried; since the 19th century white has been preferred.
We carry on to the Plaza del Conde de Guadalhorce.
