Poor Clares Monastery
Chapter 9/12 · Villaviciosa
This is the Monastery of the Immaculate Conception, of the Poor Clare nuns. It all began on 14 January 1694, when three young women of the town, advised by the Franciscans, came together to live in a house on Calle Caveda. In 1702 they moved here, then outside the walls, and the church, paid for with the money of an emigrant returned from the Americas, Juan Rodríguez Busmayor from Castropol, opened on 8 October 1727.
In 1936 the monastery and its Baroque church were destroyed, and the nuns rebuilt it after the war, much more simply. It is the last of the historic Franciscan foundations in Asturias and the only one still alive today.
Very close by is the parish church of Santa María.
