Niemeyer Centre

Chapter 2/10 · Avilés

We are in the plaza of the Niemeyer Centre. It is the only work in Spain by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, who received the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts in 1989. Years later he donated the project to Asturias, and the centre opened in the spring of 2011. At the opening, the film director Woody Allen gave a concert.

It has five pieces, and white predominates. The plaza, enormous, which Niemeyer imagined as a great theatre box above the estuary and the old town. The auditorium, twenty-six metres high, with room for almost a thousand people. The dome, a half-sphere with a spiral staircase inside. The tower, twenty metres high, topped by a disc with windows. And the multipurpose building, with the cinema, the café and the shop.

Take a walk around the plaza and take photos. If you want to go inside or climb the tower, ask about opening times at the door. When you are ready, we cross the estuary toward the old town.
