Cruise terminal and estuary
Chapter 1/10 · Avilés
Welcome to Avilés! You are standing beside the estuary, at the cruise dock, right across from the Niemeyer Centre. Avilés is a town in Asturias with almost a thousand years of history: its charter, the fuero, is attributed to King Alfonso the Sixth, in 1085. Today its old quarter is made for walking, slowly.
I suggest a circular walk with ten stops. We will leave from here, climb into the old quarter, pass through Ferrera Park, and come back to this same dock. It is about four kilometres, not counting the stops.
There is no rush. If you see a café terrace or a bench, sit for a while. But always keep in mind the time to be back on board. And now, we begin with what is right in front of us: the Niemeyer Centre.
