Dolphin Trial Monument

Chapter 8/10 · Candás

In this park stands the monument to the Dolphin Trial, a bronze fountain made in 1982 by the Candás sculptor Vicente Menéndez-Santarúa.

It recalls a real trial: in 1624 the fishermen, tired of dolphins and pilot whales tearing their nets and eating their catch, took the case to the Bishop of Oviedo. There was a defence lawyer, a prosecutor and a notary, and the sentence ordered the animals to leave those waters; the notary went out by boat to read it to them at sea. It was thought to be a legend until the notary's document turned up in 1980.

Next door is the Teatro Prendes, opened on 1 January 1956 and owned by the town since 1989.

Now we go up to the Les Conserveres park.
