Santa Catalina Hill · Eulogy to the Horizon
Chapter 8/9 · Gijón
Santa Catalina Hill, also called L’Atalaya. Before us stands Eulogy to the Horizon, a concrete sculpture by Eduardo Chillida. It was inaugurated on the ninth of June, nineteen ninety, together with the public park on the hill.
This height had a military use — a battery — from the late nineteenth century; the land returned to the City Council in nineteen eighty-two. Today it is a viewpoint: city, beaches and, on clear days, the Asturian coast.
To return to the shuttle we go down through Cimadevilla. I suggest the Cuesta del Cholo: a steep street in the old quarter, lined with low houses, descending towards the marina. It appears in local walking routes and in municipal cultural-route materials. Then a longer stretch to the Railway Museum, where the bus waits again. Let’s head down.
