San José Chapel and El Piqueru quarter

Chapter 8/9 · Lastres

This is the San José Chapel, built in the 16th century with money from the village's sailors. Its altarpiece is by Luis Fernández de la Vega, from the last third of the 17th century. It is one of the chapels that the Cofradía de Mareantes, the seafarers' brotherhood, still keeps as its own.

The brotherhood was founded in the 13th century as a mutual aid society for fishermen. For centuries it had social welfare duties and coordinated the village's communal works, which were decided in an open council, the «conceyu abiertu», an assembly of all the neighbours.

Right next to it begins the El Piqueru quarter, with the palace of the same name, from the 16th century: three floors and an outside stone staircase in two flights leading up to the first floor. In the same quarter are the remains of El Palación, a mansion from the 15th to the 17th centuries that almost entirely collapsed in the 19th century.

From here we keep climbing up to the Church of Santa María de Sábada, where we started.
