Fishwives Monument and Pedro Suarpérez house

Chapter 4/9 · Lastres

This bronze sculpture, the work of an Asturian sculptor, pays tribute to the sardineras: the women who, when the boats came into the harbour at dawn, filled a basket with fresh fish, carried it on their heads and set off to sell it in the surrounding villages.

At festivals, many women of Lastres still wear the sardinera costume: a long-sleeved white blouse, a checked skirt in black and grey tones, a black apron, a shawl and espadrilles.

Next to it is the house of Pedro Suarpérez, from the late 18th century: a noble house that keeps the traditional style, with three floors and a gallery. The Lastres visitor reception centre is also very close, in case you want information or a map.

We continue along Calle Real to the Clock Tower.
