La Fontana quarter and the Victorero house
Chapter 3/9 · Lastres
We are in the La Fontana quarter. Lastres has nine palaces with coats of arms and many stone mansions from the 16th to the 18th centuries, mixed in with the fishermen's houses. Notice how they adapt to the slope: many have three floors on the main façade and only one at the back.
Here is the Victorero house, typical of the 18th century. It combines features of rural houses, such as firebreak walls and the attic, with more stately ones, and the family coat of arms is displayed at the top of the façade. This quarter also has the urban palace of La Fontana, from the early 18th century, with a Baroque façade, and several traditional houses with balconies and wooden galleries.
Why are there so many noble houses in a fishing village? From the second half of the 17th century, many people from Lastres emigrated and founded trading companies in other parts of Spain and in America, and part of those fortunes came back to the village as houses, schools and works for the church. The old village wash houses are also preserved near here.
We keep going down to the monument to the sardineras.
