Santa Ana Square and Gastañaga Palace

Chapter 2/7 · Llanes

We are in Santa Ana square, in the centre of the old town. Here stood the San Nicolás gate of the town wall, now gone. The chapel of Santa Ana dates from the 15th century, and every 26th of July the fishermen’s brotherhoods carry the saint’s image in a procession over the sea.

A few steps away, on Calle Mayor, is the Gastañaga Palace, or San Nicolás, the former manor house of the Rivero family. It is one of the few examples of Gothic civil architecture from the 14th and 15th centuries in Asturias, and it was rebuilt in 1656.

We continue west through the streets of the town.
