Ramón de Campoamor park and monument
Chapter 3/11 · Navia
This park is dedicated to the poet Ramón de Campoamor, Navia's most famous son. In the middle stands his monument, by the sculptor Aurelio Rodríguez-Vicente Carretero, unveiled on 19 August 1913. The poet is shown sitting on a bench, holding a book and a pen.
The bronze reliefs on the pedestal show his most celebrated works: the «Doloras», the «Humoradas» and the «Pequeños poemas». A medallion reads «Asturias to Campoamor», and another inscription explains that the monument was raised on the initiative of Asturians on both continents; the collection was led by Rafael Calzada and Antonio López Oliveros.
Campoamor was one of the most widely read poets in 19th-century Spain, and also a politician: he was elected to parliament ten times. The plaque says he was born in Navia on 25 September 1817; other sources place his birth one day earlier in Piñera, in this same municipality, where he spent his childhood. He died in Madrid in 1901. Notice also the tiled benches, with views over the estuary.
We continue south, just a few steps, to the Pérez Casadoiro mansion.
