San Roque Chapel

Chapter 10/11 · Navia

This small chapel of San Roque, at the beginning of Calle Campoamor, gives its name to the neighbourhood. It was founded in the 16th century by Alonso López Navia y Bolaño, and since then it has been altered many times; it was even moved slightly from its original spot.

The Northern Way of Saint James, the one that follows the coast, passes through here, and there is a pilgrims' hostel nearby. Navia was a compulsory stop and resting place for pilgrims, who then crossed the estuary by boat. According to tradition, Saint Francis of Assisi himself passed through Navia in 1214 on his way to Santiago and stayed at the palace of Anleo.

San Roque, to whom people prayed against plague and epidemics, shares his festival with the patron saint: his day is 16 August, and the festivals of La Barca and San Roque usually end with a «jira», a popular open-air meal in the countryside.

To get back to the harbour we do not repeat any street: we go down Calle de San Roque and the Paseo del 8 de Marzo.
