Palace of the Counts of Casares
Chapter 5/9 · Salas
This is the Palace of the Counts of Casares, also called the Palace of the Counts of Toreno, beside the old road into the town. It was built in several phases, in the 17th and 18th centuries, around a central courtyard whose upper floors rest on twelve stone columns. It has a chapel, a press house and a large estate enclosed by a wall.
The main façade was remodelled in 1883, as the keystone of the door states, and at the top it bears a coat of arms with a count's coronet, showing the arms of the Queipo de Llano family, Counts of Toreno. It is a private home, so we admire it from the street.
Across the road stands Casa Velarde, from 1868, with its dormer windows. In 1870 the Velarde family set up a factory there making butter and tinplate, and around 1950 it became a school.
We head back towards the centre, to the Plaza de la Veiga del Rey.
