Church of San Esteban
Chapter 2/10 · Tapia de Casariego

This is the parish church of San Esteban, the largest in town, whose tower can be seen from almost anywhere in Tapia. Work began in 1896 but was not finished until 1941, when the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was placed at the top of the tower.
It is an eclectic church, mixing classical elements with more numerous neo-Gothic ones. It has three naves, the central one higher than the side ones, a transept and a five-sided apse. Inside, the aim was above all light and height, as in Gothic cathedrals, with rib vaults over the central nave. The stained glass in its pointed windows dates from 1992.
Look also at the materials, the same as in the houses of the area: slate walls reinforced with granite in the tower, doorways and windows, and slate roofs. The tower has three sections, and the lowest holds the doorway, with a double pointed arch on slender columns. On the east side is the rectory.
We go back to the square and walk behind the Town Hall, to Plaza del Mercado and the House of Culture.
