We are at the Os Cañóis viewpoint, which in the local language, Galician-Asturian, means «the cannons». It stands on an old defensive fort, built with the permission of King Charles III in 1780 to stop pirate raids. From here you can see a large part of the Asturian coast and the Galician coast of Lugo, the Mariña.
Below you runs the La Guardia promenade, which follows the town's beaches. To the south lie the coves of A Ribeiría, Las Furadas and El Murallón, and the large Anguileiro beach. Down among the rocks is the sea pool, a free saltwater bathing area.
These waves are famous. According to local memory, in 1968 two Australian brothers, Peter and Robert Gulley, were touring Europe with their boards and reached Tapia. It is said that they hesitated between coming back or moving on, and tossed a coin. They came back, and taught the local youngsters to surf. In 1992 the town dedicated a monument to Peter Gulley near the beach, and every year an international surf contest bearing his name is held here.
Now we continue along the promenade to the north, past the La Guardia viewpoint, to the harbour.
