San Blas Chapel

Chapter 5/10 · Tapia de Casariego

Audio coming soon: meanwhile, the text is read aloud with your device voice.

This small chapel of San Blas is one of the oldest in the municipality. It seems to have been built between the 15th and 16th centuries, although of that first building only the main doorway and the arch leading to the altar remain.

It is a simple, solid slate building, with a single nave, a lower chancel and a bell gable with a single opening for the bell. From outside it looks almost closed: light comes in only through four small windows and a round window on the facade.

This is the home of one of Tapia's most deeply rooted festivals, San Blas, in February. It is said that every 3 February the saint is «put», that is, an old wooden statue is brought close to the faithful while they pray.

Now we go down towards the sea, to the Os Cañóis viewpoint on the seafront.
